vinbladh's swedish fusion cafe

another addition to the burgeoning restaurant and cafe scene on park blvd. in university heights is the inviting vinbladh's swedish fusion cafe. we drove past it last saturday on our way to check out the wait at park house eatery, which was of course ridiculous (the wait and even bothering to check it out). so we walked up the street back to vinbladh's, past the cool patio and into the small yet cleanly-designed swedish interior of the cafe.

we had missed breakfast, which looked to be primarily open-faced egg sandwiches, so i settled on an open-faced roast beef sandwich with feta cheese, and jay had the cold meatball variety. each were only $7 and came with some tasty potato chips and cucumbers. the sandwiches were a pleasant suprise - unique flavors and not too filling - a represented a new swedish dining experience for me in san diego. i liked the cozy atmosphere of the place too, with plenty of architecture magazines on hand to peruse for design ideas.

another benefit - vinbladh's is open until midnight for that quick snack before your night out at bourbon st. across the street.

Wow!!! What a hip joint. Nothing quite like it in San diego...from the outside it looks like a classic Swedish cabin you'd find on a lake. Very different inside - swanky and hip. Really enjoyed the desserts...can't believe there's one called a vaccum cleaner that actually tastes great!!! In any case, the owner was telling me that they're getting ready to launch their live music schedule. Going over the names it sounded very impressive...amazing room...should be an incredible setting for live music!!! This place is definitely worth a look.

Go for the Princess cake....incredible!!! Also, so far as live music goes...this is definitely the warmest, most intimate room in town!!!

Well, the furniture is cheap and already falling apart. Food's way overpriced for what it is. Some of the desserts are okay if you want to pay, like, $8-9 for desser t and coffee; maybe more! Why, with Twiggs having its own bakery, and Extraordinary Desserts in Hillcrest, now in North Park? The furniture here is uncomfortable and the great music that was happenin gis over. This place is way too phony, that's why we hear the good performers' organizer left, but not sure why...

My partner and I were visiting San Diego from Santa Clara, and happened on Vinbladh's. Being Swedish I had to try it. So good!
Food was excellent, the atmosphere of the place was as well. I wish all the best to the proprietors, and enough success so they'll open a place up here in the Silicon Valley!

glad you liked it there mats. i'm concerned about the place, however - i stopped in there on a sunday afternoon and the place was empty. hope they can hang in there.

I'm with you, Paul! I'm assuming the place is fairly new; perhaps it's just a matter for publicity
and word of mouth. I'll do my best to talk it up to everybody I know:)

I went by the coffee shop today. The place is closed for good. I spoke with a guy who took over (I think) and he said that the place is in the process of being converted into An Abysnin (sp?) Ethiopian Bistro. I had some Ethiopian food back in DC couple years ago..it was awesome. Good Luck.

that's too bad - we drove by on saturday afternoon and it was closed, so we figured something was up. just too much coffee shop competition on this street with twiggs, cream and the new monica's , which looks great from the street. the ethiopian bistro sounds interesting though.

As a local musician who played at Vinbladh's several times I was able to get to know the owner a bit. According to him the building has been sold and he is looking for a new, larger location. Having played locally for a couple decades I can say that my band and I will really miss this place....had a special, old world ambience...hopefully the new space is just as nice. In any case, we wish him the best of luck and we will miss that organic coffee...best in the hood forsure.
