san diego homes designed by irving gill

i was at the kensington library recently and picked up this "new" irving gill book. it's a great resource for those who enjoy gill's clean style, and it acknowledges him as the first architect of the modernist era. as i thumbed through the book, enjoying page after page of impeccable shots, i kept recognizing san diego houses that i never knew were designed by gill. so i put together a google map of his san diego area projects, using the google mymaps utility. in some cases there are google street views, which is convenient. but i'm hoping to add my own photos to the map when i come across these properties on my bike rides.

I had the misfortune to rent the rear house at 2123 Albatross in the 1980s. It was a roach-infested box of tiny rooms and no way to get to the tiny back (dirt) "yard," except to climb down stairs and around a slope up the side. Even if the owner had cared to maintain it and upgrade the wiring and plumbing, it would still have been a miserable little box with no adequate living space. Plus the deafening roar of the planes landing, close enough overhead to spit at. Zillow show the entire unit at over a million, yet the owners pay taxes ($466) on ~$46,000. Such is San Diego.

quite an interesting story. are you referring to the main house or the rear house?

i can see what you mean about the planes being overhead - the google maps satellite image of the area actually shows a plane almost directly over the property!. i've never seen a plane in a google maps satellite view before, pretty cool.

The google maps with the Gill homes are great. Thank you. His use of concrete was so novel and served his clean line esthetics well. Not to mention his foresight in dealing with earthquake prone SoCal.

The plane in the google map too cool!

thanks auntie, i'm hoping to get some actual photos of the properties up soon. the book mentioned how gill was sometimes more interested in experimenting with concrete than designing.

Paul:
Your maps page is a great resource! You should get Erik at the Irving Gill Central to post a link to it.
BTW: Here is a photo for my house on Granada:

hey dan thanks for the comment and pic! what a great house, i love the wavy lines at the top - haven't seen gill use that before. which one on granada are you (if you don't mind me asking), so i can add it to the map?

i did email irving gill central several weeks back but didn't get a reply. my email gets spam filtered a lot though.

Hi, Paul:
Mine is 1345.
The simplified mission facade was later used on a couple of his buildings in Torrance.

Next time I see Erik, I'll mention to him about your map and photo collection. Thanks for blogging and mapping about Gill!
