street scene 2008

earlier this week i was googling for information on street scene 2008, wondering if there'd even be an event after last year's debacle, and there was absolutely nothing to be found - not even on their dormant website. a couple of days later rob hagey shook things up by announcing his intention to return street scene to downtown. yet upon closer examination, it turned out he hasn't actually secured a location there, and apparently hasn't even talked to petco park owners about using their parking lots, which is where it was last held downtown.
how can street scene return to downtown when it had to leave due to growing too large, and lack of space there? i didn't attend the 2004 event in the petco lots, but the only problem i remember hearing about was that the trolley couldn't get through at times due to large crowds. seems like a few barriers would solve that problem. there's still plenty of space in that area, and hagey is scheduling on a weekend when the padres are not in town. between these lots, park at the park, and the stadium itself, a decent-sized festival could probably fit. including the area behind the convention center is a great idea, except that those uptight coronadians somehow get to tell us all that only soft music can be played there. anyway, with the underwhelming lineup at this year's coachella (save saturday), hagey wouldn't look too bad in comparison if he puts together a modest southern california music festival this year.
i still don't understand why balboa park is completely out of the picture, other than the snooty residents and park committee members who downed it last time. while hagey apparently wanted to shut down part of 6th ave., there's got to be a way to make the festival doable in the park. after all, they're holding outside lands fest in golden gate park, so why can't we do the same? just, please - no jack johnson bro!

Some great comments there, man. There's barely enough space to hold Street Scene the same place downtown as 2004 and that was incredibly crowded and difficult to move from stage to stage. Qualcomm lacks the beauty, but has the space for gigantic crowds like '05 and '06. I completely agree that Jack Johnson need not apply. If his set could be any more tired and overplayed, then people would literally fall asleep. I'm thisclose to giving up on Street Scene altogether after last year's ordeal. Last chance I'm gonna pay any attention to you, Rob Hagey - so get your shit together and make Street Scene something that can even compare to the crazy multi-day fests that rock all over the nation. SoCal needs one!
thanks jay, i didn't realize the 2004 show was in too small of a space. it just doesn't seem possible that it could be held downtown again. haven't heard much more about that since the article several weeks ago.
it does seem like every major city has one of these festivals now - there was an article in the UT today about it. no reason san diego can't find a place for one too.
I attended to street scene 06 and 07. I would be great if they could do it on downtown.
PLEASE bring NINE INCH NAILS to street scene 08!!!!!
I attended street scene last year, and two of you seemed to have commented about the ordeal or debacle that took place last year. I was wondering if someone could tell me what the debacle/ordeal was?
I have atteneded Street Scene for the last 3 years, all of which have been amazing. Personally, i loved coors last year and i would rather have it there this year then at qualcomm. i would kill to have say anything play next year!
looks like they are trying to have it at tailgate parking lot at petco park. a "scaled-back" festival...
Coors was actually a great venue because the main stage sounded better than anything they used to throw together downtown. It was more about the music and less about the beer. But if you want it downtown, have it INSIDE Petco and put small stages outside. (Schedule in October after the Padres have lost.)
Last year was a shambles?? Killers, Muse, Air, Jaguires, Panic at the Disco all brilliant.
All you complainers...
never again will I buy my tickets in advance. The lineup was a joke. Did San Diego run out of money to get good bands or what? Not sure what the debacle was last year but this year didnt hold a flame to last years.
