protest against papa bigot

there's a protest planned at the san diego grand hyatt this friday, july 18 at 1 pm. march on manchester has the details of this event, which will protest papa doug manchester's huge $125K contribution to the anti-equal rights folks backing proposition 8; this ballot initiative would overturn the california state supreme court's ruling making gay marriages legal. there's more info about papa doug's contribution on the boycott manchester hotels website, and i wrote on this shortly after it was announced.

note that there will be plenty of folks purposely staying at the hotel to support manchester and to combat us militant homo-fundamentalists. funny what supporting equal rights will get you called sometimes; i thought militant fundamentalists were folks who forced their beliefs onto others, telling them who can and can't get married.

don't forget that papa doug manchester represents the worst of san diego in several ways: a powerful developer who seeks little public input on his projects (see the recent naval broadway complex ruling); serves his own interests over the public by walling off much of the harbor next to the convention center; a business owner who welcomes gays to spend money at his businesses and then uses it against them; and the good-old-boy conservative gang that has run this city for far too long.

I think it is interesting that you are so driven by Manchester 's political ideology: I have to point out all of your padst cruel disregard for the ken-tal folks who wanted proper public input and noticing. I believe you used every pejorative - Nimby, etc., - but the gltb agenda really is the force that shapes who ypou support and who you don't. Perhaps you can develop a more reasonable approach to democracy, ....

thanks for your comment. i'm not driven by a gltb agenda, just a desire for equal rights. you might see things differently if you were in my position - i could be fired from my job simply for being gay in many states in this country, and my 8-year relationship with my partner is still not recognized at the federal level. it's time to call out people like doug manchester who want to ensure their personal religious views dictate the private lives of others, and who have the money and power to make that happen. and frankly, terms like "glbt agenda" are a tired attempt at smearing the equal rights effort.

regarding kensington terrace, there was a significant component to its opposition that was purely NIMBY, no matter what the size of the project was. in my opinion, that was selfish and i called them on it. gays working toward equal rights is not equatable with this from my perspective - unless you'd call the black civil rights struggle of the 50's and 60's selfish too. i wonder what papa doug thought of that fight at the time?

Excellent blog. Hope the Manchester protest went well, looked like it did on the news.

I would like to invite you to view my first YouTube video @ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tbibzeSR_-o it somewhat fits in with your blog. Although it hasn't gotten the circulation that I had hoped, over 2,500 have viewed it and that is by word of mouth/email. Those who have seen it, have all left positive remarks.

I hope you and your partner will check it out, at the very least, touching and it brings a tear to your eye, knowing how far the gay community has come, and how much further it has to transcend.

Have fun at Pride!

Too much editing on my last post, I knocked off a couple words in the last paragraph...what I meant to say:

"I hope you and your partner check it out, and find the video, at the very least, touching and it brings a tear to your eye, knowing how far the gay community has come, and how much further it has to transcend."
