universal up for sale
san diego business journal reports that universal in hillcrest is being shopped for a buyer, with owner james brennan struggling to pay more than a half million in construction-related debts. i didn't realize the amount of moolah that went into this place - 4.5 million, or one million over budget according to the article. apparently structural problems with the building contributed to the problem, which explains why it took so damn long for it to open. and with the club only profiting about 30K a month, it's going to take a long time to pay those bills - unless brennan finds a buyer fast. while the abbey owner was rumored to be in the running a while back, you have to wonder if the smart money is just going to wait this one out until they can get a great deal.
there was an article several months back about the slowing economy and its effect on the upper-end clubs. i wondered here about the clientele at clubs like brennan's (part-owned) stingaree - wouldn't the mortgage crisis hit many of the high-debt-flyers that frequent these places? with bar west having been sold in pacific beach, along with the witherby downtown, and universal and side bar (downtown) up for sale (not to mention stingaree being available "at the right price"), it sounds like brennan is feeling the effects. which is too bad, since he's set the bar for high quality clubs in san diego. unfortunately i think closings are bound to hit some of the upper-end places in san diego given the current economic climate.

these guys emphasize the bridge and tunnel crowd & the tourist crowd to their detriment. the only time i went to stingaree is when barry weaver booked switch (producer of mia's kala) and it was a good venue, but just oozed douche. and it's not like i'm an undesirable poor person.
but the troubles were predictable just from the cyclical nature of the economy.
I just read another article in today's U-T regarding EnDev's problems. I guess the days of millionaires making $30,000 are over - thank goodness.
It will be interesting to see what they do with Top O' The Cove in La Jolla, though.
I should make myself more clear above. What I meant to say is that the days of self-proclaimed millionaires making $30,000 a year are over and done.
EnDev is going down like the Titanic. Sad for San Diego.
i can't say i'm sorry to see that Universal might not pull through. high-end clubs are nice, but they tend to squeeze out some of the long-standing neighborhood-y bars.
sometimes i just want to get a casual beer in hillcrest without feeling underdressed.
Hi,
Good news!
Universal is NOT being sold nor will it be closing down any time soon.
Hopefully you'll come by and see for yourself why we'll be around a very long time.
Regards,
Billy
how come these guys can't make it ? "stingaree will sale for the right price" according to endev's brennan. barwest sold. sidebar sold. witherby for sale. top of the cove has sat empty for over a year since they bought it with other people's money. sad for the investors and sad for the banks. they were fun places to go. hopefully, universal will stay open.
